When the first hardy pioneers traveled through Minnesota in the 1850s, they found a beautiful spot called by the Native Americans “Wa-zu-wee-ta,” which translated means “Island of Pines”. The name was so appropriate that it was retained, but “Wa-zu-wee-ta” or Island of Pines, was too large a mouthful for the pioneers, so the town became Pine Island. The industrial heart of Pine Island has been dairy, agriculture, and small business since it’s incorporation and that is still true today. Main Street is home to a number of businesses and the established neighborhoods are just off Main Street. The creation of a new subdivision a number of years ago prompted the building of a new school, which has quickly become one of the best in the region. Pine Island is a wonderful place to call home.
